And We’re Off on Another Adventure – The Great America (Socially Distanced) Road Trip

Last updated Jul 6, 2020 | Published on Jul 6, 2020

The day has finally arrived. Today, Daniel and I officially move into our Rialta and begin exploring the United States. We’ve spent the past 5 weeks at a lovely AirBnB in La Conner, Washington – a tiny town with a cute waterfront that I didn’t expect to love as much as I do. But it’s time to move on.

Daniel and I will begin by crossing the country along Interstate 90, hitting National Parks and roadside attractions along the way. World’s largest strawberry? Yes please. SPAM Museum? Indubitably. Glacier National Park? Absolutely.

These plans are all rather tentative, however, depending on the spread of COVID-19. Some of these locations will be closed or too crowded to safely visit. In those cases, we will content ourselves with simply driving by from a distance. The great thing about traveling in an RV is that we are completely self-contained, so we can avoid interacting with other people as much as possible.

If things get too dicey, however, we may have to change course to avoid hotspots or shelter in place for a while. Daniel and I take the Coronavirus seriously and don’t want to inadvertently spread it to others. Even though we’ve both already recovered from COVID-19, too much is unknown about the virus to be sure if we are immune (or for how long). So we wear masks when out in public and avoid areas where other people are congregated and/or not taking the proper precautions.

We’ve been planning our departure for some time, but for a while there I wasn’t sure if we’d be able to leave town today as planned. I’ve been dealing with another Ulcerative Colitis flareup for the past month which isn’t responding to my typical course of medication. I finally contacted my doctor last week and drove to Seattle for some tests on Wednesday.

Aware of my tight schedule, my gastroenterologist contacted me on the Fourth of July to let me know the test results. He confirmed that, although my body does show elevated markers consistent with inflammation, it is not especially worrisome (yet). He believes the flareup probably can be treated with some additional medication. No colonoscopy needed. Whew!

So we start our Great America Road Trip today as planned. It’s not how we initially thought we’d be spending the summer. We originally planned to be in Scandinavia about now, traipsing over mountains and exploring fjords. Ah well. We do the best we can with the options available to us. If there’s one thing we’ve learned by now, it’s how to adapt.

See you all down the road!

The City of La Conner cancelled their fireworks show this year but the fireworks were plentiful across the channel at the Swinomish Reservation.

This surprise fireworks show at the Swinomish Reservation was spectacular! And it went on for hours. Tons of fun.
