About Unicorn
Hi, my name is Katy Shaw – although my friends call me Unicorn. I am an avid hiker, traveler, and adventurer. Although I originally hail from Seattle in the United States, I’m currently traveling around the world with my husband, Daniel. He’s also blogging about our travels – you can view his blog here: The Wandering Hedonist.
I love hiking and try to explore new trails in each new place we visit. I’m also obsessed with National Parks, mountains, long-distance hiking and other outdoorsy things.
In 2016, I hiked the 95-mile Wonderland Trail around Mt. Rainier. In 2017, I hiked over two-thirds of the 2650-mile Pacific Crest Trail which stretches from Mexico to Canada along the Sierra and Cascade mountains. In fact, it was while hiking the PCT that I picked up my Trail Name – “Unicorn”.
In October 2019, Daniel and I quit our jobs and got rid of most of our possessions in order to travel around the world. Six months later, our international travels were cut short by COVID-19. We had a firsthand view of the Coronavirus Outbreak in Italy and eventually returned to the United States. Unfortunately, we caught the Coronavirus on the way back home. I kept a daily journal of the experience which you can read here: COVID-19 Diary: My Experience with Coronavirus.
We weren’t ready to settle down after we recovered from the virus, however. So in May 2020 we bought a motorhome (named Appa) and began travelling around the United States on a Great America (Socially Distanced) Road Trip. We spent the better part of a year driving around America in our 21-foot VW Rialta motorhome visiting National Parks and sheltering away from other people during the pandemic.
Now that we both fully vaccinated and international travel restrictions are easing up again, Daniel and I are back to traveling the world. Our RV is parked in storage and we flew to Lisbon, Portugal in July 2021 to continue exploring the globe.
