On October 16 2019, Daniel and I packed our bags and headed once again to the airport. I was starting to get used to air travel – we’d been in an airport or an airplane for 7 out of the last 16 days. I steeled myself for another unpleasant day as we seemed to be having bad luck with air travel so far.
But my worries turned out to be unnecessary. Our flight from Barcelona to Split with Lufthansa Airlines was pleasant and uneventful. We had a short layover in Munich and got a great view of the Alps from the airplane which was a real treat.
When we disembarked from the airport shuttle bus near Split’s ferry terminal, the setting sun cast the harbor in a lovely golden hue. The main pedestrian-only thoroughfare was lined with pricey restaurants and vendors hawking souvenirs to the holiday-goers.
Then we turned a corner and were transported back in time. The Roman Emperor Diocletian built a palace here in 305 A.D. and the location is still occupied to this day by shops, restaurants and houses. Portions of the original palace walls are still visible, although over the years modifications have been made to suit the ensuing inhabitants.
After a romantic dinner, we meandered around Old Town’s cobblestone streets. We wandered through a maze of small alleys and windy streets, enchanted. Around each corner we seemed to discover a new piece of history.
I think I’m going to like it here.
Where are we now?
