A Lazy Beach Day at Warren Dunes State Park

Last updated Oct 15, 2020 | Published on Sep 27, 2020

A loud sound startled me awake. Something had just landed on our roof. What in the world was that?

I started to drift off to sleep when I heard it again.

I looked outside the windows and found acorns on the ground all around our vehicle. Aha! That explained it. I hoped they didn’t dent our roof.

Our campsite at Warren Dunes State Park is in the middle of acorn land

Beach Day

The next afternoon, we headed to the beach. Daniel and I had been camped at the Warren Dunes Campground for a couple of nights and hadn’t seen much sand yet.

The campground wasn’t located super close to the beach and we had been too lazy to explore. But after a rest day, we were ready to see what Warren Dunes State Park has to offer.

We drove to the day use area and found four enormous parking lots and bathing rooms stretching the entire length of the beach.

Warren Dunes State Park has four parking lots at the day use area. Three are currently not in use due to the late season.

Wow. I had no idea this place was so big.

I can only imagine how packed this place must be during the summer months. Thankfully, there weren’t many other people here on a Thursday afternoon in late September.

It was a lovely sunny day and we enjoyed lazing around on the sand. We even went for a swim in Lake Michigan.

Our shady spot at the beach. We even brought our outdoor rug! (Thanks mom 🙂 )

A great view

Not too crowded at the beach today. Works great for me!

Oooh that water is cold!

Daniel and I have both officially dipped our feet into Lake Michigan

Hello from Lake Michigan! Literally!

A Rookie RV Mistake

When Daniel and I returned to the parking lot, I saw something on the ground next to Appa. It looked like a long black tail. As we moved closer to investigate, we realized that it was the electrical cord for the RV.

Ruh roh! We had driven away from our campsite without unplugging from the power box!

Luckily for us, we had only driven 2 miles to the other side of the state park. We inspected the cord and it still seemed to be intact, although a little worse for wear.

The last thing we needed right now was to replace the entire electric cable. We had just sunk thousands of dollars into our motorhome a few days ago at the repair shop.

Still, we wouldn’t know for sure until we tried to plug it in back at the campsite.

Twenty minutes later we both heaved a giant sigh of relief. I plugged into the power box and everything seemed to be functioning normally.

Whew! Crisis narrowly averted!

Appa pictured after we put her tail away

The scene of the crime. Luckily we didn’t totally destroy either the electrical box or the cord.

Where are we now?

We are at Warren Dunes State Park in Michigan!

Hi, I'm Unicorn!

What tools/apps are you using to find campgrounds and hotels? Nixlie and I are leaving for a 2 week roadtrip and we’re planning to Cabo and stay in hotels.

  2. leannirene

    Uh, not Cabo, camp. :-p

We use a variety of apps tools when searching for camping and hotels. AllStays app for iPhone is good. Unfortunately they don’t have an Android app and we both have Pixels. We have an old iPhone with us that so we can check the app sometimes. is food for finding national campgrounds. HipCamp for non-traditonal camping (it’s like AirBnB for camping). Most states have a state park campground reservation web site. We’ve ended up staying in more KOAs than I anticipated so I use their app too. For hotels I like We use AirBnB all the time too.
